Dreamweaver is having a nightmare?

FrontPage CS5?

Recently, there was posted a rare article that exposed the emperor of web editors for being naked.

Well, it's about time! Finally, the development community is starting to see the jigsaw puzzle in focus. Content Management Systems and their built-in editing interfaces are making stand-alone (and expensive!) website editing software obsolete.

What makes this story even more compelling, is the consolidation of software companies [Adobe + Macromedia] that led to the dominance of ONE editor [Dreamweaver], and then that ONE editor finds itself whistling alone in the dark in the forest of users.

The title to the above linked article is "I'm sorry but Dreamweaver is dying" but we doubt it will ever completely disappear like FrontPage, GoLive, Pagemill, Hot Metal, etc. did. There was once a period of time where you could boast that you used Dreamweaver in much the same way drivers boast they drive Porsches or Mercedes. But today, it's beginning to sound like driving a Pontiac.

Generally speaking, we don't like this consolidation of ownership of everything. We can all agree it comes with some very bad side effects as evinced by recent banking history. With many content management systems, you can choose what kind of editor you want to use. Drupal has about 3 good ones to choose from, all of them free.

We don't think Adobe is smart enough to offer up a low-cost, trimmed down Dreamweaver plug-in for content management systems like Drupal. It may be time to put that Bonneville up on blocks.
